After being disappointed by Far Cry Primal (and thrilled by Far Cry 5), I was looking for another open-world game to keep me entertained until some of the fall blockbuster titles come down in price.I read some good things about this Mad Max game -- heaven knows, I loved the Fury Road movie -- and thought I'd give it a try.Well, my gamble has paid off in spades. I'm really enjoying this game and the bleak but strangely beautiful world Max and his Igor-like sidekick Chumbucket inhabit.I was concerned that I wouldn't like the melee action and lack of ammo -- I suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome, and too much button-mashing can be painful -- but fortunately, with a little experience and some leveling up, Max is now taking on bad guys with aplomb and little carpal tunnel pain...The car combat is a hoot, too. As you drive around, thugs in hot rods try to attack you, and you have to fight back, either using your car as a battering ram or getting out and shooting at a vulnerable part of their cars, often followed by yet another melee. Some reviewers here have complained that the game is repetitive, but personally I don't mind repetitive games as long as I'm having fun playing them, as I am here. What's the best part of an open-world game? The hours upon hours of play and exploration you can expect, and Mad Max does not disappoint. At the current price of under $30, MM is a long-playing bargain, and I recommend it highly...I loved the movie and this game is pretty entertaining too! It's an open world - but a very vast and empty one. You work to build up Max's skills and car. You have a sidekick in Chum, who talks a lot and is entertaining. You help strongholds build up which in turn help keep you healthy and supplied. It's a lot of fun driving around doing the little tasks, clearing out bases, etc. I really like it! It gets a little repetitive but not for a long time. I recommend this game for anyone who likes open world style games you can play alone!not the survival game I was hoping for but a fun arcade style game true to the feel of mad max movie road warrior & fury roadHad this game before but beat it and traded it it. I really missed the gameplay and the fighting. I also enjoy the movies so the game was an absolute blast that I had to order it again now that the price has gone down. 10/10. Playing again when it arrives.I should have paid more attention to the description I guess. Assuming it would work with my previous save file (20+hours on a rented disc) because it said US compatible - I sadly found out it will NOT load my previous save files, but it does work; so I’ll be heading to rent this game again - to hopefully finish it and whenever i want to come back to replay start to finish, I’ll use my copy i bought.Might be the best game ever made... Best realistic gritty hand-to-hand combat game, period....Belly to back suplexes, MMA tackles and slams, jumping double leg drop kicks, body slams, sidewalk slams, front kicks, jumping arm bars, knees, stomps, spinning elbows... all in beautiful slow motion. The Arkham games and Sleeping Dogs were beautiful hand to hand combat games, but Mad Max outdoes them. Not to mention you get a four barrel sawed off shotgun and a cool car. This game delivers the goods. This game blew me away! I cant believe I've never played it before...? This is one game I can see myself playing again. Do yourself a favor and play it!Arrived early and an awesome game I can’t get enough of.If you are:-Pissed off how Shadows of War pushes micro-transactions in a single-player game, seems to look even worse than its predecessor and generally does nothing new whatsoeverand-Have a nostalgia that there are no wacky driving games in this gen, something like Flatout, Twisted Metal, etc.You should DEFINITELY get this game!If you do not fit in either category, the rest of the review follows:Mad Max is THE sandbox, open-world game, literally. You are deserted in a... desert, this is a semi-survival game, where health does not regenerate, you need to find food, water for that, there are quite limited bullets, you need to look for even for a fuel for your car to be able to drive and scrap - the bread & butter of this game, the main resource - to upgrade yourself, your clothes, your skills, and most importantly - your car.The combat, about which so many people whine, that hurr durr "It's the same as Batman, Shadows of Mordor and even dumbed down" while technically true, it is a good thing. This game doesn't innovate much in combat, it uses tested and liked system, and c'mon - I'll be the first to say that video games need innovation, but not every game should be a groundbreaker, Mad Max decides to pick what is tried & tested and improves upon that and does it great! At first, yes, pushing Triangle in time to parry is a great part of the combat, but there are differences - if you panic-push it when nobody actually is striking you at the time, your combo resets. Also you are rewarded by doing "Perfect Parry" - pushing just before enemy hit lands - timing matters. Also Max does not fly through battlefield like a ping-pong ball, you can parry and hit only those enemies who are close enough, crazy thing - by pushing parry you do not automatically fly in their face, like it is in the mentioned Batman: Arkham Knight. Also you can NOT parry hits which come from sides and behind, you will be hit anyway. These times you either turn first and then parry or dodge away. Yes, Max is a normal human, not a Batman superhero who can multi-parry instantly in 360 degrees. The next, simple but genial thing is how IMPACTFUL combat feels, how crushing and brutal are your attacks. The sound, the visual effects, the camera shake, the combat feels very, very good! I honestly don't understand naysayers, either they are "professional" reviewers, who have never actually played the game themselves or just liars. The basic combo, at least 2 basic hits and a strong hit (strong hit is holding the attack button, it is slower and makes you unable to parry during the animation) also changes according to positioning. There are different attacks, animations when enemy is just standing up, when enemy is pushed against the wall - you crush their head against or or when enemy is kneeling, you kick them in the stomach and the face like rabid beasts and stomp on them afterwards! There also are more combos, shiv attacks, special attacks later on when you unlock upgrades. The combat is simple at the beginning and appropriately complex with upgrades, melee weapons (all of them got limited hit count you can do and they can not be carried in the car) disarm attacks, executes, etc. and always from the start to the max upgrades the combat is impactful and feels great! There also are a lot of out of mission stuff to do in open-world but it never feels boring, you either go with brute force to break in camps through perimeter defenses, or find intel and vulnerabilities, up to you, there are scarecrows to destroy, places where you collect stuff, project parts, history relics, race starting points, minefields, top-dog bases and the fast-travel checkpoint is especially cool - an air balloon! Sometimes it is within enemy camps. You fly up and then manually though binoculars find stuff through viewing which then appears on your map.The car combat is wacky as promised - you can harpoon enemy car doors, tires, even the drivers themselves if unprotected, you can side-slam, nitro boost, even use shotgun to enemy fuel tanks for instant boom, everytime you aim the game comfortably enters into temporary slow-motion and there also is aim-assist, subtle enough yet quite effective. Explosions look especially great, and not a single frame drop. The whole world, despite being a desert looks incredible! You can also upgrade your cars with flamethrowers, blades on body and even wheels, and to choose between speed or tankiness or a compromise in between. The upgrades are quite deep and nearly for every part of the car, tires, exhaust, engine, body, boost, etc. etc. You can also build according to given prototypes which are plenty and some you have to at certain parts in the story.A note, that you absolutely have to patch this game. There are reports it is glitchy and broken without them. I didn't even play unpatched, I patched immediately and not a single glitch, not a single crash.. except in The Pink Eye's territory, later in the game, it suffers from quite severe FPS drops.. it affects PC version aswell. But it doesn't happen always and to everyone, and reports say it becomes much less of an issue after clearing that territory from enemy structures and units. Also in melee combat camera sometimes is wacky so you have to actively control it but it's not that bad, considering that for the in-your-face feeling and brutality of the combat, it is quite close to you, not like in Batman: Arkham Knight where in combat it tends to go up.Overall this is very underrated, overlooked game, which is similar to Shadows of Mordor in base mechanics, minus the parkour, there is next to none of it and on the top of that - the incredible car combat & customization! The fun is practically guaranteed! This game, oh my, this game.I am a massive fan of apocalyptic everything, when Road of Fury was released I felt my life would get good again. When I saw this game, being sold on Amazon, for 2/3 of the price it is on the PS store, I may have cried tears of happiness, the increased dopamine flowing around my brain cells urged me to squeal with excitement and caused me to shut off any thought other than 'buy now with 1-ckick'.I was not disappointed. This game has made A listers look like C listers, it had a made eating dog food cool, and it has made hunchbacks pretty.Beautifully presented with unparalleled detail and a brilliant storyline to boot, I cannot flaw this game other than how much it keeps me out of sunlight.Perhaps my favourite feature not mentioned elsewhere is the freeze frame screenshot maker. I've never come across this before but I was completely blown away... Literally... With all the explosions in the game, all the car on car brawling, stunts, racing, shooting, punch ups, destruction and general badassery, it's impossible not to want to pause the action for a moment, and get a different angle by flying around the frozen frame as if it were frozen time, with body parts flying from out of exploded cars, you've just gotta get the right shot! You'll know what I mean if you get it.While I do feel like the story is lacking somewhat, Mad Max is a fun open world that'll keep you entertained for hours and hours. While people were focused on MGS 5 Phantom Pain at the time, it was Mad Max that caught my eye instead. Just to clarify I did buy both games around the same time but I played Mad Max first since it appealed to me more. This bears resemblace to my times with a game called Rage which I really loved. Traversing through the desert atmosphere with crazy bandits chasing you, I knew this would be my sort of game. The open world is full of things you can do, with each area requiring you to kill snipers, dismantle camps and takeover strongholds. Their's also other optional stuff that you can do but I don't want to spoil it in case someone is interested in buying the game.As with every open world game, certain areas in Mad Max are harder then others. This signifies that it's a gradual progression game rather then just hopping straight to an area when you feel like it. So because of this.........That's where Mad Max's skills come into it. The more story missions and optional missions you decide to do, you will earn rewards that can help rank up Max.Not only can you Rank up Max you can also improve the Magnum Opus. To me this is where travelling from one area to another is important. As explained above the areas get harder and the enemy cars become sturdy and take less damage so upgrading both Max in Combat and the Magnum Opus for driving is essential to survive.Mad Max also has very fun vehicle combat. Their's a substantial amount of missions that require this and this is key when exploring the map as it's highly likely bandits will engage you.The game can be quite addictive to the point where you forget the story and end up doing the side activities. Personally I felt the side activities were more fun then the main story.Even though I had no qualms with the story (neither loved nor hated it) I felt it could have been slightly better. Also I couldn't bring myself to like Max as a person. He's had a bad past and refuses to move on regardless. Because of this he appears quite a bitter person and you just want him to let go of the past.Overall I found Mad Max really fun to play. You get bang for your buck. Their is tons of missions, side activities and collectibles to keep you entertained. If you're the type of gamer that loves big open worlds with a lot of things to do, then this is a must buy.I really want to see a Mad Max 2, here's hoping for a sequel in the near future.very underated game...ive been having some massive fallout 4 sessions but one thing it really misses is some driving...so thought i would grab mad max for some apocalyptic speed action....not much of a story...just enough to keep you interested kind of...but what it does do it does brilliantly....graphics are pretty damn good....the foraging different areas could get a bit samey for some people but its a game where all the worlds gone to crap....so anyone left alive would be doing pretty much the same to survive....fantastic game and easily a 20+ hour game....small update...im much deeper into the game now and like a few have stated there is some very noticable frame rate drops...in some aereas it kills the game...I have not seen the movies nor do i usually play post-apocalyptic games as they don't appeal to me. But Mad Max is different in that it is a decent story with enjoyable characters. Chumbucket who is your assistant in that he fixes up the cars for you is great to watch and listen to. Having a green dot on screen always makes it clear where you need to go next, with a green dot and mission objective in the top left corner of the screen. Still in the early stages of the game but it has given me that urge where i want to go back on the PS4 and do another mission.I would highly recommend this game.
